Greenpoint. The Transition – detailed program

Greenpoint. The Transition is a series of cultural and social activities realized in New York, USA by the Culture Shock Foundation from May to December, 2014 consisting of educational workshops, concert series, movie screenings, and local recreational activities, all targeted at Poles, those with Polish roots, and everyone interested in Polish culture and history.

Concerts and movie screenings do not require a reservation. Just come and join us! Translations from Polish into English and vice versa will be available. 

 Participation is free of charge!

Workshops held in Polish: Known and unknown Polish emigrants – literature and historical workshops, Intergenerational Greenpoint – discussion meetings in a friendly setting, Polish Jazz history -workshops with and about music.

Photo Collages – photographic workshops for youths

Description: Summer adventure with photography! Young participants will take on the role of photojournalists and will create a visual history of Greenpoint.
Age: 9-12 years old
Where: Brooklyn Public Library in Greenpoint, 107 Norman Ave, NY.

1. Me, the reporter // 08.18.2014 // 10 am – 1 pm //

Learning basic skills of photography and being a reporter, making portraits.

2. Mapping the neighborhood and photo-walk. // 08.19.2014 // 10 am – 1 pm //

Having a photo-walk and creating a map of Greenpoint.

3. Sticker art // 08.20.2014 // 1 pm – 4 pm //

Reviewing photos taken during the walk and preparing stickers.

4. One day in Greenpoint // 08.25.2014 // 10 am – 1 pm //

Off we go out into the open air, again. Collecting material for postcards.

Working on the material, creating postcards.

Polish history on board games 

Description: These workshops are a great occasion to develop knowledge about the history of Poland, meet new people, and have fun while playing board games. We will play “Queue”, “Chivalry Game: Battle of Grunwald”, and “Memory ’39”

Description: Photographic workshops for everyone who wants to start their adventure with photography or would like to improve their skills and discover Greenpoint through the lens of the camera.

History of Polish jazz

 

Description: Workshops for anyone interested in history of Polish jazz, listening to good music, meeting some of the best jazz artists and a trip to one of the most famous jazz clubs in the world.

Description: a series of chamber music concerts presenting Polish composers and Polish folk music consisting of innovative improvisations performed by high-class New York musicians.

 17th of May 2014, 4-7 pm – “Talking Heads,” a documentary directed by Krzysztof Kieślowski, “Robotnice” (Workers), a documentary directed by Irena Kamieńska, and “Amator” a work of fiction directed by Krzysztof Kieślowski.

14th of June 2014, 4-7 pm – “Po-lin, Slivers of Memory,” a documentary directed by Joanna Dylewska, “A Girl Like Me: The Gwen Araujo Story,” a work of fiction directed by Agnieszka Holland.

Block Party in Greenpoint

Open, neighborhood event that will consist of concerts, exhibitions, urban games and lots of fun! Will take place in Greenpoint in September 2014. More information will be available soon.
