AMERICAN DREAM IN GREENPOINT

ORAL HISTORY

Greenpoint is changing in front of our eyes. The Polish character of this neighborhood is not as distinct as it was 10-20 years ago. Political transformation, EU access, visa lottery policy modification, and gentrification are the main reasons for this process. It is becoming more and more ethnically diverse, a phenomenon worth monitoring.

„American Dream in Greenpoint” project was created in 2015 to document, archive, and monitor these changes. The goal is to recall the old Greenpoint from the memory of its inhabitants and at the same time show the current face of this less and less Polish part of Brooklyn. This project is realized by Culture Shock Foundation as a part of „Greenpoint. The Transition 2016” project. We are cooperating with Emigration Museum in Gdynia, Poland where our materials will be archived and enlarge a collection about the experience of Poles

BROWSE THROUGH EMIGRANT’S ARCHIVE

WHAT DO WE DO?

We are conducting audio and video interviews with Polish immigrants who, for a significant amount of time, lived in or were connected to Greenpoint. We are interested in all emigration experiences: adaptation process, employment, family and social life, connection to Poland, Polish community abroad and its organizations. We are searching for people who came to the United States in the 90s or earlier.
